Overall Responsibility The role of Health Promotion Officer in the Asthma Society is an exciting new post in the organisation. The successful person will be part of the health promotion team, and will develop and deliver innovative health promotion projects that will help fulfil the mission of the Asthma Society. He/she will develop key relationships with relevant partners to build capacity and mobilize target groups around asthma management. Main Duties/ Responsibilities
  • Develop, coordinate and deliver a range of health promotion programmes for specific settings and target groups as necessary (e.g. children, parents, teenagers, socially excluded groups, schools, workplaces etc.).
  • Develop a range of health promotion projects/programmes aimed at selected target groups to improve asthma management and their health outcomes.
  • Work in partnership with community based organisations and relevant agencies to develop and deliver a range of evidence informed programmes, resources and materials to respond to the specific needs of the target groups.
  • Identify and develop appropriate channels for distributing health promotion information in collaboration with the communications team.
  • Assist in the development and use of quality standards, monitoring and evaluation methods for health promotion projects.
  • Work to build the sustainability of projects which have demonstrated impact and delivered key outcomes.
  • Work with other teams in the Asthma Society as necessary.

Selection Criteria Essential factors:
  • Degree or professional qualification in Health Promotion or related area
  • Minimum of two years’ work experience in Health Promotion or related area
  • An excellent understanding and knowledge of health and its determinants and strategies to address health inequalities
  • An ability to think strategically and work for strategic change, which often calls for a level of influence and leadership beyond the authority and status of many health promotion posts
  • An ability to champion evidence-based practice with a focus on ethical principles
  • Ability to effectively partner and collaborate with statutory, voluntary and community organisations to maintain and build partnerships
  • A commitment to building health promotion capacity and skills in others
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to think creatively
  • Excellent organisational, administration, research and project management skills
  • Excellent IT skills
  • Proactive and flexible approach required
  • Excellent attention to detail, results driven, energetic and personable approach required
  • Full clean driving licence required, the successful candidate must have access to a vehicle and be willing and able to travel as required, and be willing to work outside of normal working hours
  • Postgraduate Diploma/ Masters in a relevant field
  • Good understanding of how health inequalities can be addressed
  • Experience in the health sector in Ireland
  • Experience of working with different groups including disadvantaged groups
